When deciding between two or more choices for a style rule in your team's programming style guide, and all of these lead to code that is equally maintainable, prefer the rule you can explain in the fewest words.
"Readability" is also everyone's goal, but fails as a criterion because it is far too subjective.
I've always wondered what it would be like to put some Subversion hooks in place that always reformats code on commit, then programmers can do whatever they want in their working copies. This won't address naming, but it should let us move beyond tabs/spaces/curly braces/etc.

ReplyDeleteYou can do that already with IntelliJ and TeamCity. It's not Open Source, but I really hope the concept of "Post-Commit" will appear in open source software.
